Probiotics: the potential for a live microbicide to prevent HIV.

چکیده
After early microbicide candidates failed in clinical trials to prevent HIV, recent news from the South African CAPRISA-004 study suggest that the new generation of vaginal microbicide gels using antiretroviral drugs like tenofovir could be effective and reduce HIV and herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 acquisition.1 This landmark study greatly energized the field and revived enthusiasm for the development of female-controlled products to prevent HIV acquisition in women, and if ongoing trials confirm the CAPRISA-004 results lead to a licensed product by 2014. 23

Microbicides:New Potential for Protection
KEY POINTS • Scientists currently are studying over 60 substances as possible microbicides. Some 45 of these substances are in laboratory or animal testing, and 17 are in various stages of human testing. Five are in or about to enter phase III clinical trials— the final stage of testing—which will determine how well these microbicide candidates prevent HIV infection and how safe they are for lo...
متن کاملCultural differences in acceptability of a vaginal microbicide: a comparison between potential users from Nashville, Tennessee, USA, and Kafue and Mumbwa, Zambia
PURPOSE We sought to determine the relationship between acceptability of a hypothetical vaginal microbicide, cultural factors, and perceived HIV risk among African-American women in Nashville, TN, USA, and African women in Kafue and Mumbwa, Zambia. PATIENTS AND METHODS Women in both sites completed a survey. Regression analyses were performed on valid samples (Nashville, 164; Zambia, 101) to ...
متن کاملPreclinical evaluation of the HIV-1 fusion inhibitor L'644 as a potential candidate microbicide.
Topical blockade of the gp41 fusogenic protein of HIV-1 is one possible strategy by which microbicides could prevent HIV transmission, working early against infection, by inhibiting viral entry into host cells. In this study, we examined the potential of gp41 fusion inhibitors (FIs) as candidate anti-HIV microbicides. Preclinical evaluation of four FIs, C34, T20, T1249, and L'644, was performed...
متن کاملEffect of lactic acid bacteria and the potential probiotic Hafnia alvei on growth and survival rates of narrow clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus Esch., 1823) stage II juveniles
The aim of this study was to screen potential probiotic bacteria against Aeromonas hydrophila and determine the effects of antagonistic bacteria and a commercial product containing lactic acid bacteria on the survival and growth of stage II Astacus leptodactylus juveniles. For this purpose, a total of 110 bacterial strains were isolated from adult, stage II crayfish juveniles and rearing water ...
متن کاملHistorical development of vaginal microbicides to prevent sexual transmission of HIV in women: from past failures to future hopes
Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global public health concern and is particularly serious in low- and middle-income countries. Widespread sexual violence and poverty, among other factors, increase the risk of infection in women, while currently available prevention methods are outside the control of most. This has driven the study of vaginal microbicides to prevent se...
